Certified Nurse Assistants who work in a hospital assist in caring for patients with health problems which range from minor to severe. For those who have health problems that they are unable to recover from, the role of a CNA becomes very important in their lives. CNA’s are there to make patients feel as comfortable as possible while assisting with activities of daily living. Depending on the type of hospital, healthcare providers are typically made available 24/7 to assist patients while they recover and or throughout their total stay. A CNA is able to help make sure they feel comfortable and taken care of.

Types Of Patients You Will Care For

Hospitals also have specialty clinics, such as a surgical clinic, where people may go to receive care and it does not always require them to stay overnight. For those individuals who receive same-day care, they are referred to as outpatients. When serious health problems arise, often people find that they can no longer care for themselves, and are then checked into a hospital as an inpatient. This means that they will be staying over night at the hospital for any amount of time.

Types Of Hospitals

There are two main types of hospitals. The first is a general hospital. This type of hospital provides outpatient and inpatient care to any age, illness, and injury. It also provides emergency services as well as education and testing. Each type of care is sectioned into separate departments throughout the hospital. This ensures that specialized care can be attended to for each specific type of illness or injury. The second type of hospital is called a specialized hospital. This hospital only provides care to a specific need, such as a children’s hospital, clinic, oncology, or intensive care unit.

What Is It Like To Work In A Hospital

Each department and shift duties varies depending on the level of care. In general, however, you can expect to be very busy if you work in a hospital. As a CNA in a hospital setting, you are made available to assist patients in need of basic care under the care of a licensed nurse. A general hospital provides round the clock care to inpatients as well as provides 24 hour emergency care. You may be assigned to work overnight, in which case you would be asked to set up a room for any newly admitted patient, assist in activities of daily living at any hour, and provide routine care throughout the night. It is a wonderful place to begin your career as a can, as you will learn very quickly what is expected of you. You will also develop valuable habits which will open up a world of opportunity for a budding career as a healthcare provider.

Conclusion

It is best to keep in mind that whether you work in a specialized hospital or a general hospital, each patient is unique. Compassion and patience are two very important qualities to possess if you plan on working in a hospital. This type of specialty care will ensure that each patient you care for will be treated with love and respect, especially in a stressful and or critical time in their life. Working in a hospital gives you the opportunity to make a difference in someones life, especially if it is at the end of theirs.

It takes someone special to be a great nursing assistant. Whether you work in a hospital, nursing home or in-home care your primary responsibility is help your patients do the things they can no longer do.

It is vital to realize your own feelings about the sick and elderly because any and all negative feelings you have can affect those under your care. If you’re unsure about your feelings towards the elderly or sick you must sort those feelings out before you start or continue work as a CNA. Your most important strengths as a CNA are your compassion, kindness, caring and respect.

Your tasks can vary greatly depending on the level of illness and independence your patients have. Learning how to care for patients of various levels of independence is a big part of being a CNA.

The CNAs of any healthcare setting are the eyes and ears of the rest of the healthcare team. Since they work closer with the patients than anyone else they will many times have the most insight into how a patient is feeling and what their needs are. Because of this close relationship patients will depend on CNAs more than anyone else.

CNAs will be required to make many important decisions regarding their patients. When making these decisions some of the most important questions you should be asking yourself include:

Is my patient safe?
Am I protecting their privacy?
Am I doing everything possible to protect their dignity?
How can I encourage my patient to be independent as possible?
Does my patient want to talk?

Becoming an exceptional CNA requires you to do many things that are not necessarily done while on the job. You must live a lifestyle that will help you perform your duties as a CNA. You must be healthy, confidant and rested to perform at your best. Some of the qualities of a good nursing assistant broken down by categories include:

Health and Hygiene:

Eating a well balanced diet rich in produce
Getting plenty of rest
Having good posture
Professional dress
Good hygiene and clean scrubs
Exercises
Wears comfortable shoes that provide support

Social:

Getting along with others
Good listener
Able to talk to staff members and families
Able to tell a patient there’s a problem

Character:

Knows what information should be kept private and keeps it private
Is polite to everyone
Is always honest
Dependable and reliable
Energetic
Respectful

If you’re serious about becoming the best CNA possible you have to make it an important part of your life and keep the things mentioned in this article in the forefront of your mind. CNA work is one of the most important jobs there is. Tending to the elderly and the sick is a duty that must be done with care and love.

Being a CNA is a wonderful career full of rewarding experiences. There’s nothing more exciting than just finishing up with CNA school and venturing out into the work place with a brand new set of nursing assistant skills. With that excitement comes a little bit of anxiousness. You may be questioning yourself, and even over-thinking the brand new job ahead of you. Until you have mastered you’re trade, you may find that nerves are normal. With time, you’ll be fully seasoned and training a new hire! Until you do, lets go over the CNA basics.

Getting To Know Your Facility

You’re first few weeks at work can be overwhelming, but it helps to put things into perspective. No one expects you to be perfect, and everyone knows that learning takes time. You will be taken on a tour of your facility, at which time it is very important to pay attention! You do want to impress everyone right from the start by remembering where the supply closet is right?! Here are a few more things to look out for:

-Emergency exits
-Patient/Resident charts
-Literature: Medical dictionaries, references, etc.
-Showers
-Supply rooms
-Kitchen
-Linen closets
-Equipment rooms
-Linen bins
-Emergency supplies

If you are not given a tour, just ask for one. If you need another tour, just ask! It’s better that you know what you need to do and no one cares if you ask questions. You are there to do your job, and until you feel comfortable with your surroundings you may need a walk through a number of times. Even the seasoned pro’s ask questions!

What To Have Handy

When you buy your scrubs, it’s a good idea to have a lot of pockets, because odds are you will be utilizing them! It’s not fun to run back and fourth to your locker or desk for a pen! As you go, you will figure out what you want to have with you or not. Until you do, here are a few universal items to get you started. Have in your pockets and on you at all times:

-Small notebook
-Black or blue ink pen
-Small travel lotion, for your hands from washing them all the time.
-Watch
-Work ID or Badge

Often times facilities will have little reminders attached to them. If not, make a cheat sheet for yourself with reminders on it such as abbreviations, codes, positions, and emergency procedures. Laminate it and tuck it in your pocket.

When in doubt, write everything down! Refer to your cheat sheets as often as you need to. You are not expected to be perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. Remind yourself that you are in a learning stage, and until you are confident, those nerve may linger. Take deep breaths, keep your head held high and your ears and eyes peeled. You will have it all down in no time! One of the best pieces of advice I was ever given, is to pay close attention to your co-workers. The ones who have been doing it for many years have the tricks of the trade down! Take a mental note as their advice will save you in the long run. Last but not least, congratulations new CNAs and good luck!

If your interested in becoming a certified nursing assistant, you may be able to take advantage of the training provided by the American Red Cross. The Red Cross is typically know for their lifeguard, CPR and first-aid training. Many people, however, are completely unaware that the the Red Cross offers both online and in-class CNA courses in many states. These classes usually range between $600- $1500 per course. Most of these programs are between 2 – 6 weeks in length but some may be measured by hours spent learning, rather than a time-frame. Most classes are 100 hours in length which is enough to satisfy most state requirements. The Red Cross training programs always meet the state requirements for the state that they are in.

Red Cross CNA programs will undoubtedly fully prepare you for a nursing assistant job, as long as you give your best effort and do the assigned work. The Red Cross is highly regarded because of the nationwide status, their charitable nature and the quality of all of their training programs. If there is a Red Cross program available in your area it’s most likely the best option if you goal is to become a CNA.

One great feature about the Red Cross training programs is the fact that they provide very comprehensive training that includes subjects such as “the art of care-giving,” “working in the healthcare system,” “working in long-term care,” “how to be a good nursing assistant” and many other topics that will not only prepare you technically but also mentally and emotionally for the tasks you will face as a nurse’s aid.

Red cross training programs are more common in states including Alabama, Kentucky, Wisconsin, DC, Florida, Michigan, Virginia and Hawaii, although these are not the only states that courses are offered. The will, however, be the easiest states to find a Red Cross program.

The Red Cross CNA training programs can be a great option for many potential CNAs, however if there’s not a Red Cross program available in your area there are many other great programs out there that are offered at technical schools, community colleges and training facilities. These programs are usually in the same price range as the Red Cross programs and many offer both in class and online CNA training. Your state’s board of nursing can be a great staring place to determine what’s available to you.

With so many options available it can be tricky finding the CNA training program that’s best for you. For example, the American Red Cross offers a fully compliant, comprehensive nursing assistant program; but it’s not available in all areas. In many cases, finding a school or training facility is a the right option for CNA training, however that’s not always necessary.

Some hospitals or nursing facilities will offer on-the-job training for nursing assistants, especially if they are in need of new workers. Calling or visiting your local hospitals and nursing facilities and talking to a hiring manager will give you an idea of how badly they are in new of new workers and whether they offer on-the-job training.

If you decide to start in in-home care you may not need to be certified. In this scenario, essentially you will be traveling to the home of an elderly or sick person to help care for them. It will still be beneficial to have some training under your belt for this type of job, but it’s not always necessary. You should, however, be at least trained in CPR and first aid before taking on any job where your are responsible for caring for another person. An in-home care giving job can be a good place to start because it will allow you to test the waters and determine if CNA work is the right career for you.

Nursing Assistant Schools

If you’re looking for an actual school that provides CNA training there are many technical and even online schools that offer nursing assistant and nursing courses. These schools are usually much more expensive than a CNA course like the one the Red Cross offers, however you may qualify for financial aid which will allow you to complete your program with no immediate out-of-pocket costs. The first and best option you should always attempt is to see whether your local community college offers any nursing assistant or even nursing courses. You will most likely be able to enroll in these classes completely free of costs (other than textbooks). While this option is not always available it is important to at least check and see whether it is or not.

Nursing Assistant Programs

The nursing assistant schools available to you really all depend on the area you live, how much you’re willing to spend and whether any free training options exist. No matter where you live there will be options available to you, so if your goal is to become a CNA don’t give up because you can’t initially find a school or training program that meets your needs. Talking to acquaintances in your area who are already CNAs or nurses is really your best resource, because they know the local options better than anyone else. Also, be sure to give your state’s board of nursing a call for more information on what’s available and accredited in your area.

2010 median annual CNA wage = $24,010

The Salaries for nursing assistants can vary greatly depending on several factors. These factors can include:

Type of facility
Experience
State you live in
Required duties

In General, CNAs that work in hospitals can earn greater wages than those that work in nursing care facilities or in-home care. In-home care can be a great place to start because many times a certification is not required and it can build your resume for the higher paying jobs. Jobs earnings can vary greatly, meaning some in-home care and nursing facility jobs may pay as much or even more than some hospital jobs.

A lot of this variation is dependent upon the type of duties performed. The tasks that are more technical and precise in nature will prompt higher wages due to the need for more training and more responsibility. For example, some CNAs are certified in phlebotomy, which means they are trained in drawing blood. This type of skill usually requires separate training from a traditional CNA course. however there are many CNA course that teach a vast range of skills that can be utilized in hospital settings.

States where the cost of living is higher, such as California and New York also pay higher wages to their CNAs. CNA salaries in these states can range between 30K-40K per year. If your state has a higher than average cost of living than the CNA positions will pay corresponding higher wages. Demand also plays a role in CNA salaries. The states that have a higher demand for nursing assistants also pay more for them. The states with the highest demand include California, Connecticut, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey and New York. Demand Continues to grow in states like Virginia,Arkansas, Utah, Delaware and Ohio.

Demand in general for CNAs will continue to grow as the healthcare field grows quickly due to an increasing elderly population. This trend will continue to provide more jobs, higher wages and more job security for CNAs and other healthcare professionals.

In 2010 the national median annual wage for nursing aides was $24,010. The top 10 percent earned more than $34,580. The per hour rate comes out to anywhere between $12 and $20 per hour.

When looking to enroll in CNA classes there are several different options, depending on where you live and the available schools, hospitals and training facilities. In some cases you will not need formal CNA training classes to become certified. For example, hospitals will many times offer free training. This training however will not consist of sitting in a classroom, rather it will utilize hands on applications. Essentially you will be trained on the job under the supervision of a registered nurse. This type of training can be ideal because you will already have a job when your training is completed.

For traditional CNA classes, community colleges, trade schools and vocational schools all offer training in a classroom setting, with option to complete coursework online in some cases. These CNA programs can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. In many cases financial aid can be utilized. The first step is to contact the school and fill out their enrollment application which is sometimes available online. The most important factor in enrolling in any CNA class is to be sure that it is approved by your state. If the course is not state approved then you will not be eligible to take the state exam.

Federal regulations require nursing aids in any state to complete at least seventy-five hours of instruction, with sixteen of those hours devoted to hands-on clinical practice. This means that the majority of the coursework can be completed online as long as the program is recognized by the state in which you are planning to work. The minimum is 75 hours, however some states may require even more training. When compared to most professions the 75 hour requirement is nominal, so it may even be to your benefit if your state requires more training. You can always start by contacting your state’s board of nursing to verify any CNA training programs.

If you’ve done all of your research and feel that the CNA career is a good fit for you the next step is to start the process to acquire an official certification so that you appear on your state’s registry. You should know that not all CNA jobs require a certification. For example, most in home care jobs will not require you to be certified and they can be a good way to test the waters before you decide to earn your certification. However, for hospital and nursing care facilities, where you will make higher wages, you will be required to be certified.

Becoming certified as a nursing assistant is a great way to start a career in healthcare, especially if you plan on becoming an Rn or an LPN. Many nurses got their starts as nursing assistants. It provides an advantage because it allows you to understand better how to properly care for patients. CNAs are also given priority over other candidates when applying to nursing schools that may be impacted.

The best way to get started in earning a certification is to contact all of your local nursing homes and hospitals because many of them may provide free training in exchange for hours worked. Once the mandatory training hours, under the supervision of an registered nurse, have been completed you will be eligible to take your state exam.

The state exam consists of two parts. The first part, which is theory based, will require you to memorize vocabulary terms and definitions. The second part will require you to complete particular assigned skills on actual patients. The correct techniques and sanitary practices must be observed. Most students who have completed all of their training hours will have no problems with passing the state exam.

If there are no hospitals or nursing homes in your area that are currently offering free training there are other options. First contact your local community college and find out if they have any nursing assistant courses. If they do you will most likely be able to qualify for and utilize financial aid, which means the training will essentially be free for you. If your local community college offers no such courses there are technical/vocational schools that specialize in CNA certification. These schools may even offer online CNA training where a portion of the coursework can be completed from a home computer.

Nursing assistant, nursing and healthcare in general are growing fields which means those that become certified as CNAs will enjoy more job security than many other industries. Best of all training can be completed in 6 to 12 weeks which means you will spend more time working and earning money and less time training.

Working as a certified nurse assistant is very physically demanding. All of the lifting and bending can really take a toll on your body. You are on your feet for a large majority of your shift, which means that you will be very tired at the end of the day. It’s essential to stay fit and choose to eat healthy meals, not only for your health, but in order to keep up with the work load. It is very important to take care of yourself when you are working such a physically demanding job. You lift people regularly, often times supporting most if not all of their body weight. You also move and use heavy machinery such as lifts. The following is a great list for you to start keeping in mind while at work and in between shifts while at home.

Body Mechanics
Follow all transfer procedures correctly while using proper body mechanics is key. You don’t want to injure yourself while you are helping others. Remember that this often starts with good posture. Stand up straight and keep your back straight while standing and sitting. All of those hours sitting at the computer charting can be strenuous on your back and neck. Stretching is a great way to alleviate the tension and even energize your body!

Exercise Outside
Taking a walk or a jog outside for at least 30 minutes a day will help increase blood flow and give you a wonderful boost of endorphins. Exercise also keeps your muscles toned and strong with makes it easier for you to perform heavy lifting at work, as well as being able to withstand all of that time spent on your feet. Most of the time, if not all of your time at work is spent indoors. You miss out on all of the benefits of sunlight which is essential for humans in general. The sun not only provides us with vitamin d, it also helps our moods and keeps us feeling happy! While you are outside, take deep breaths. This will rejuvenate you and give your lungs some much needed fresh air.

Wear Protective Gear
Make sure to wear the protective gear provided for you at work, such as gloves, face masks, and pe gowns. This will prevent you from catching a virus or illness, especially in patients rooms that have a contact precaution warning sign outside the room. This also protects the patients from contacting anything from you. Often times you will come across a patient who is very susceptible to disease. This may be because they have a weakened immune-system, especially when they have just gotten out of surgery.

Vitamins

It’s essential to take your vitamins, especially a multivitamin. Every morning with breakfast you can take half. This way it won’t upset your stomach. Later in the day at lunch, or in the evening with dinner, take the other half. Your body craves these vitamins that we just don’t get enough of in our diets. It’s extremely inexpensive, and will save your system in the long run. When you have enough vitamins and nutrients in your system regularly, your immune system will be strong which means you will be less susceptible to catching viruses.

Drink Water
Instead of reaching for the coffee and soda, grab a nice tall cup of water! Your body craves this, especially while at work. Without water, you can easily develop headaches and or migraines. Drinking plenty of water will help your body stay hydrated.

Choose a Healthy Snack
Often times coworkers will fill the break room with unhealthy foods to share with everyone such as homemade cookies, cupcakes, breads, and candy. These are all foods that may seem to give you a rush at first, but you will eventually crash. Bring a protein bar or some trail mix with you in your bag. Every few hours take a few minutes to eat that healthy snack. This will keep you energized, and it won’t pack on any unwanted pounds!

Last, but certainly not least, take advantage of the perks which are provided for you at work. If you work at a facility that provides massage therapists, a massage is great for your muscles and will relax you. Some places even offer yoga classes. Even though you are there all day or night, do try to make it to those classes. They are free and can be a really fun thing for you to do with a coworker outside of the everyday scrub attire!

Just like CNA, LPN is a growing filed due to the increasing elderly population, among other factors. For many CNAs becoming an LPN is the next logical step towards becoming a registered nurse. For others the LPN position may be where they want to stay. The main advantage of LPN over RN is the fact that there is less schooling to be completed and you can still earn a great salary. According to the Burea of labor statistics website the median hourly wage for LPNs is around 20$/hour.

Training to become an LPN can be completed in as little as 1 year. The courses are offered at some community colleges and many technical colleges. Many nursing assistants who completed their CNA training online may be interested in online LPN training as opposed to on-site training. Due to the time constraints of working professionals looking to advance their careers (especially those in the medical field) completing as much of their training online as possible is invaluable.

Once LPN courses are completed you will be qualified to take the state exam known as the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX-PN to become registered as a licensed practicing nurse in your state.

Being a registered LPN opens up a wide array of job opportunities because the need for this positions is in high demand and will be for years to come. The Bureau of Labor says job outlook for LPNs will increase at 22% between 2010 and 2020, which is 8% faster than average. The job opportunities of LPNs can vary greatly and include anything from positions in hospitals and other urgent care facilities to private care facilities. Being an LPN allows for the opportunity to travel the world because the services of these professionals are in high demand almost everywhere.

One of the best things about becoming a LPN is that if you decide to become an RN none of your schooling will have gone to waste. You simply enroll in a LPN to RN program which will allow you to earn your Rn with about 1 additional year of schooling.

Many online schools may feature LPN programs, nursing programs and other healthcare programs. Be sure to make sure that these schools accredited and that the certificate they offer is recognized by your states board of nursing.

Some programs may offer a fully online curriculum while other may be partially online and partially at local campus. Whether you’re a CNA or just somebody whose looking to start a new career, becoming a LPN offers great pay and job security all with a very short time spent training.
